Fouling Abatement: Proper RO System Design
By Jane Kucera
FOULING MEMBRANES REVERSE OSMOSIS SCALING
Abstract
Fouling and scaling of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes is the bane of most RO systems. Membrane fouling and scaling leads to extended system down time; increased energy, chemical, and water usage; and frequent membrane cleaning and replacement. Maximized performance is achieved by minimizing membrane fouling and scaling. The objective of every operator of an RO installation is to maximize performance of the system (i.e., minimize fouling and scaling of the membranes). Fouling and scaling of an RO system can be affected in a number of ways, including The manner in which the system is operated. The degree and appropriateness of pretreatment. Data collection and interpretation. Equipment design and sizing.
