Disinfection Reverse Osmosis Membranes
Abstract
Reverse osmosis (RO) system owners and operators are continuously challenged with minimizing fouling of the RO membranes. The primary foulant affecting virtually all RO systems is bacterial in nature. Traditionally, chlorine gas or bleach has been used for disinfection of the RO feed stream and pretreatment system in an attempt to minimize membrane biofouling. However, these techniques promote the formation of undesirable species, such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), which have already faced increasing regulation by the government.
