Abstract

Part 1 of this article series looked at the growth in U.S. oil shale gas development. Data from the U.S. Department of Energyメs Energy Information Administration (1) projects that shale gas development in the United States will make up 49% of the nationメs gas production in 2035. Part 1 also examined some basic issues involved in shale gas wells such as preparing the well site, drilling and completing the well. One aspect of the discussion included issues related to hydraulic fracturing. The article concluded with observations about gas production and water management. This article will look at treatment concerns and approaches for flowback and produced water associated with hydraulic fracturing of new oil shale wells. Topics addressed will include conservation, environmental concerns, groundwater, waste minimization, and wastewater treatment.
