Abstract
Ironically, there are two ways of viewing the announcements by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that it plans to study hydraulic fracturing, and potentially issue regulations. Those who oppose the heavy hand of government see this as a threat to the energy sector, and the potential job creation it offers in our very fragile economy. Already examples exist of the dampening effect of government action. In the Marcellus shale region, there is a economic boom underway in Pennsylvania, while New York has little drilling underway because of the state governmentメs opposition to hydro fracking. That said, the water business could actually benefit from stronger regulation at the state and federal level. This report briefly examines this oilfield water segment, which many consider as a part of the water business with a bright future.
