Abstract
The domestic oil industry began with the drilling of the first well in 1859 near Titusville, Pa. By the early 1950s, petroleum had replaced coal as the nationメs chief fuel. Today, U.S. refineries process more than 17.7 million barrels of petroleum per day. Of this, approximately 48% is refined into gasoline, 17% into on-road diesel, 6% into off-road diesel and heating oil, 9% into jet fuel, and 4% into residential fuel. The balance of the petroleum production (16%) is used to make liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), petrochemicals, lubricants, and other refined fuels.
