Abstract
Trace contaminant removal continues to grow as a larger and larger number of contaminants are identified for removal. More and more components are coming of interest because these contaminants are becoming identified in waters where they were not previously identified. Regulators are requiring control at lower and lower levels of these contaminants to mediate against health effects of the contaminants in question. In some cases, analytical chemists have made heroic contributions by developing better analytical techniques with lower and lower detection limits. We are certainly in an age of greater attention to trace contaminants, and removal to new limits. Removal of these contaminants must be done in a manner that is cost effective. Endusers do not want to spend any more than they have to comply with these regulations. The lowest cost will almost always win, so the economics of the separation are always paramount.
