Water and Wastewater Business Opportunities in the Semiconductor and Solar Markets
By Seth Cutler
Abstract
Opportunities for water and wastewater treatment equipment in the semiconductor, microelectronics and solar photovoltaics (PV) markets are increasingly focused on efficiency and performance enhancements in the short to medium term. There will continue to be fabrication (fab) plant construction in Asia and most likely the Middle East, while regions like North America, Europe, and Japan will focus reinvestment on existing fabs to enhance current operations and performance. As a result, global water treatment market revenues in this area (1) will increase from a current (2011) level of $985.0 million to $1,388.5 million by 2016. This market is segmented by water treatment equipment, wastewater treatment equipment, and design and engineering services. This growth will bring a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the 2011 to 2016 forecast period of 7.1%. Figure 1 shows projections of the global growth in the semiconductor and PV water treatment markets.
